The Opportunity

Network optimization solutions have existed for a decade, helping businesses manage traffic on their expensive WAN connections between remote offices and data centers. But existing WAN optimization controllers (WOCs) are no longer delivering the same level of optimization because of three big trends in corporate IT:

• Cloud Computing –Cloud computing moves the web servers out of a company’s control, so the IT department loses the ability to place a WOC near the web server to provide network optimization, leading to a steadily growing amount of unoptimized traffic.
  
  
• Mobile Computing – Mobile computing is shifting the networks that corporate traffic traverses from the WAN that IT controls to mobile carrier networks that they don’t. This means that IT can’t always provide optimization for remote and mobile workers.
  
  
• Encryption – For a WOC to cache content, it has to be able to tell what that content is, and SSL (HTTPS) prevents this. There are workarounds when the web application server is controlled by IT. But in the case of SaaS, or any public website, there are no good solutions, leaving another gap in network optimization.
